Marlcliffe Community Primary School, Sheffield

Front view of Marlcliffe School, taken on Marlcliffe Road. There are two sets of entrance gates on this road, both marked GIRLS and INFANTS. The only entrance for Boys, that I can find, is on Overton Road, which runs parallel with this road at the rear of the building. The school opened in 1915 and was originally known as Wharncliffe View School In 1924, Sheffield Education Committee used the eight classrooms on the first floor as an experimental school for older pupils. This was known as Marlcliffe Intermediate School and 'offered' three year courses in subjects such as Physics and Chemistry. This intermediate school continued until 1964 when the pupils were transferred to Myers Grove School as the northern part of Sheffield 'moved over' to Comprehensive Schools. In December 2011, Sue Schofield contacted me with the following comments ... Re Marlcliffe School, this was rebadged as Marlcliffe Grammar School at some point and 11-Plus children were sent there up until at least 1962/63. I passed the 11 Plus and went there in 1962, there was a 'grammar school' curriculum but only a couple of years later the school became a primary, and the pupils were transferred to either Chaucer Comprehensive, or Myers Grove. Chaucer was my destination. The Marlcliffians had a school song, blue/yellow tie, and blazer emblem and many of us felt proud to be at such a good school.
