The Norman garrison would have defended the top of the wooden palisaded motte which was protected by its dry ditch or moat. Even today it is hard to scale, let alone when your legs are filled with lactic acid, your lungs are pumped to bursting point, an enemy is hurling spears, boulders or firing arrows down on you and the din of battle fills the air. This type of conflict may never have occurred here and today it is the most peaceful spot imaginable, 'smale foweles maken melodie' and the breeze drifts by and a distant pony whinnies and I could sit on that bank all afternoon and have a decent 40 winks....
