This private area has been fenced off for a while but it is hard to find out for how long. Scottish Canals marks it on a map of 2011 as a proposal, and there is no mention of it in a 2017 strategy document, which goes on a lot about reducing conflicts between cyclists and walkers (a cycling charity was one of the main consultees). So presumably it happened at some point between these dates. Whilst an unusual sight it is very understandable. It can't be easy living on a houseboat close to so many busy bars (many of which have sprung up as a result of the much-needed redevelopment of the basin in the last 15 years) and rapidly multiplying student accommodation blocks.
