The somewhat strange-looking tree sculpture on a patch of dandelion-covered grass constitutes a memorial to John McNamara, a local man who was awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War. A tree design was chosen because the name Bamber Bridge derives from the Old English 'bēam' and 'brycg', meaning a tree-trunk bridge.
