Stocks were used in England as a punishment for minor offenders from Anglo-Saxon times until the 19th century. Local miscreants would sit with their feet secured through the holes for several hours, invariably in a prominent position in towns or villages, subject to abuse and ridicule from passers-by. These beautifully preserved stocks are in the centre of Dunchurch on the village green.
