A tree lined section of the road north of the village. This road was opened in 1831 as a turnpike running from Shotley to Gateshead. Long known as The Low Road, as it runs along the valley bottom. The high road was the route along the top of the valley from Consett to Gateshead via Dipton and Sunniside. A much rougher route with a lot of hills, it is now the A692.
