Dating from the 14th century I believe. Named for St Giles, who was most likely Greek and lived as a hermit in France around 650 AD, he was supposed to have so befriended deer that they sustained him with their milk and several miracles were attributed to him, he apparently heard confession of Charlemagne which made an angel appear to post a letter outlining a sin so dire that Charlemagne had never dared to confess it etc etc. His saint's day in the UK is September 1st. Interesting cove I'm sure.
