Arkell's Brewery - mash tun and underback

The mash tun is where the milled malted barley is mashed with water (brewer's liquor). The liquid is drained off through a perforated suspended floor into the underback. This is also where extra sugar can be added if necessary, hence the added name of dissolving vessel. Although the plant items are numbered as No. 1 they are in fact one and only at this end of the process. From the underback the liquid is raised to the steam heated copped for boiling and hopping.
