A nine mile route between Stockport and Marple was created in 2012 following the construction of a new footbridge at Chadkirk. The route wasn't named Alan Newton Way after Stockport's Olympic medal winning cyclist until 2016. Here the route passes Pear Mill. The route is part of Sustrans Route 55 https://www.sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/route-55 which is envisioned to eventually connect Ironbridge to Preston.
