A small village in the depths of Gloucestershire is an unexpected place for some ancient monastic history. A Benedictine priory was built here in 1121-9, close to earlier Saxon places of worship. The priory was closed by Henry VIII in 1535, and the church was later dedicated to St Swithun. As a side note, it appears that a William Heygate Butlin was vicar from 1878 to 1906, and is a grandfather of holiday camp pioneer Sir Billy Butlin.
