It is located in the Thames Valley at the confluence of the rivers Thames and Kennet, some 37 miles west of London and about 24 miles southeast of Oxford. Reading dates from the 8th century and became an important trading and ecclesiastical centre in the Middle Ages, with Reading Abbey, a large and rich monastery. The town is a major commercial centre, especially for information technology and insurance. It also serves a large area of the Thames Valley as a regional retail centre.
