When the Ryeford roundabout was built in the latter part of the twentieth century, a new road was built over the canal and called Haywards Bridge. The canal towpath was respected, even if the bridge has not. Oddly, walkers going under the bridge are serenaded by a strange noise, not unlike a submarine's sonar, along with a set of flashing lights - presumably an art installation - on the north side.
