Seen from the entrance to Kensington Gardens is the Royal Lancaster Hotel, Bayswater Road, which sits above Lancaster Gate underground station. Built in 1967, the hotel is not the most attractive modern building. The 265 acres (107 hectares) of Kensington Gardens was originally the western section of Hyde Park, which had been created by Henry VIII in 1536 for use as a hunting ground. The gardens became the private gardens of Kensington Palace and were opened to the public in 1841. The gardens are on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, grade I, with much history and detail at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000340
