Lady Margaret Hall college was founded in 1879 and is named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. The first Principal was Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great-niece of poet William Wordsworth. Originally a college for women only, in 1979 it accepted men for the first time. Alumni include Benazir Bhutto, historian, Lady Antonia Fraser and politicians Ann Widdecombe and Michael Gove.
