What was the purpose of this stone shelter set into the bank here? It is similar in shape to a small lime kiln, but there's no evidence of a hearth etc, and there's no local supply of limestone. Neither is it an ice house as it faces the sun and is far too shallow. One of the men in the photo suggested that it may have been some sort of store for potatoes or other root vegetables. Old OS maps offer no clues.
