Looking in from Hamilton street what can be seen here (to the rear) is the original National School built in 1850, largely on the initiative of Mrs Letitia Harris who raised money from subscriptions, drew up plans, engaged a builder, and employed teachers to establish the town's first free school on land donated for the purpose by Sir James Cockburn. The building is now a private house. The building in the foreground was the teachers' accommodation. This school was subsequently replaced by a larger one over the road which was demolished in 1969.
