This important early mill was home to an interesting museum that closed shortly after this picture was taken - a great loss. I hope suitable homes have been found for all the items. This is a manual knitting frame with a Derbyshire rib attachment and dates from c1810. Jedediah Strutt and William Woollatt obtained a patent in 1759 for the attachment to Lee's stocking frame that enabled the knitting of ribbed hosiery. The ribbed section had previously been hand knitted by women. Ribbing is still helping us to keep our socks up today.
