From Kidderminster Town station on the Severn Valley Railway. The darker cloud above the lead locomotive is exhaust as the power is piled on. Seen during the 2022 autumn diesel gala on the Severn Valley Railway. No. 56 081 leads No. 20 048. The class 56 is a heavy freight locomotive with a Ruston-Paxman engine of 3,250 bhp driving a self-exciting alternator. The current is rectified for the traction motors in a Co-Co configuration. A total of 135 were built and this example was built by BREL at Doncaster and is due to be rebuilt as a class 69 along with class member 56 098. The class 20 is also known as the English Electric Type 1 and 228 of these Bo-Bo diesel electric locomotives were built in two batches between 1957 and 1968. The engine is an English Electric 8 SVT generating 1000 brake horsepower. Maximum speed is 75 mph.
