Until at least the late 60s, this gateway was not just a simple field gate. Through it also passed the railway line connecting Kingston Gypsum mine to the Midland main line (see Image). It curved away to pass to the left of the windbreak at the left of the picture. An article about the railway appeared in the 1967 Trains Annual (Lady Angela's Railway by Susan Youell) Update: A 2014 re-visit of the site made it clear that the railway did not in fact pass through this gate, but had a separate level crossing immediately to the left of the picture. This was the end of a drive to Kingston Fields Farm, on the Kingston Hall estate.
