The shopping centre was an early foray into suburban malls for Edinburgh and opened in 1984 around a hypermarket occupied by Sava Centre, a joint venture between Sainsbury and BHS. Sainsbury are still there. It's not really an out of town shopping centre, being right in the middle of a part of the city with few other shops at the time of construction.
