The plaque above the street name reads: This is the house tho' built anew Where Burns cam' weary frae the pleugh To hae a crack wi' Johnny Doo on nights at e'en and whiles to taste his mountain dew wi' Bonnie Jean. Johnny Doo was the affectionate name for John Dove, the landlord of the Whitefoord Arms, which was home to the rather disreputable Court of Equity. Epitaph on John Dove, Innkeeper, Mauchline. Here lies Johnny Pidgeon, What was his religion, Whae'er desires to ken, To some other warl Maun follow the carl, For here Johnny Pidgeon had nane. Strong ale was ablution, Small beer persecution, A dram was memento mori; But a full-flowing bowl, Was the saving his soul, And Port was celestial glory.
