The factory on Gibbet Street was formerly home to Butler Machine Tools, founded 1868, although the present works dates from 1917. The Mile Thorn Works produced machines for metal-working, later diversifying into other areas. It was still operating in the 1990s under the name Asquith Butler, but the doorway is now bricked up and the present use of the building is not clear.
