Malet Lambert High School, opened 1932, to replace the Craven Street school, that was packed to capacity. The arms incorporate the four original houses of the school, viz: de la Pole, Ferens, Marvell and Wilberforce, the surnames of four former Members of Parliament who represented Kingston upon Hull: William de la Pole, merchant and first mayor of the town, Thomas Robinson Ferens, who helped establish Reckitt & Sons, Andrew Marvell, poet and satirist, and William Wilberforce, leader of the movement to abolish slavery. Joseph Malet Lambert (1853–1931) was vicar of St. John's parish, Kingston upon Hull, later elevated to Dean of Hull, Canon of York, and Archdeacon of the East Riding within the Church of England. He was active in social reform and the municipal affairs of Kingston upon Hull, including housing, sanitation and education. He was chairman of Hull Higher Education Committee, 1905–1931.
