Poor people, whose family could not afford a normal grave plot and headstone, were buried in unmarked graves. In the 1850s shared graves were introduced. These were narrow graves about 6 metres deep containing up to 20 burials, one on top of another. These had a shared headstone. The standard charge was a guinea (£1/1s).
