The Geograph project started in 2005 with the aim of publishing, organising and preserving representative images for every square kilometre of Great Britain, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

The modern library on Lymington Road replaced the older one which is just around the other side of the Town Hall. The latter was built as the Carnegie Library in 1906-7 but was part of a phased plan that shortly included the new Town Hall.
