Little is made of this 12th century motte and bailey castle which can be approached only by an unsigned muddy path and lacks any sort of interpretation board. The fortification was founded by Hugh de Hardreshull, whose name has become corrupted to Hartshill in modern times; his descendant, John de Hardreshull, founded a stone castle adjacent to, but not enclosing, the motte, the remains of which can still be seen (but not in this view).
