According to Historic England who list it grade II* (list entry 1246555), the 16th century house was originally built on Dogpole, and moved to its present position c.1702 by the Earl of Bradford. The Revd Edmund Dana (1739-1823), who gave his name to a nearby street, lived at Castle Gates House, and it had a major restoration c1912. It appears still to be in residential use, though possibly subdivided.
