Tree-grown, relict cliffs that back the postglacial rock platform are of younger sedimentary rocks that weather and erode easily, with just a few places where rock outcrop is visible. Further to the west the cliffs approach the modern shore where hard igneous rock is present. Sandy bays reflect the availability of sand from the eroding sandstone strata.
