Kipper Hill takes its name from the method of smoking herring that is said to have been invented at nearby Seahouses by John Woodger in about 1843. At the bottom of the hill is an old smoke-house which has now been turned into apartments. The wall on the right hand side forms part of the town's Elizabethan walls.
