This machine was used to cut large underground tunnels (headings). The Friends group has salvaged if from a pile of scrap and re-erected it in this simulated underground heading. This had originally been displayed in the museum's 'fake' underground that was built in the old sidings on site and was entered via the Institute shaft and exited by the fan drift. This underground experience was constructed in 1986 and abandoned on closure in 1993. By 2006 it was in a dangerous condition due to corrosion and Stoke City Council arranged for its demolition. This was meant to be done sympathetically but allegedly it was just ripped apart and the artefacts suffered. The Friends group are doing their best to fight for the site's survival and have created a heritage centre and memorial garden. This machine is in part of the latter.
