The railway route into Weardale was in use as far as Eastgate until 1993 by the Blue Circle company to ship cement out of the valley. From then, the company used road transport only. The sidings here are adjacent to the cement works site which was cleared of almost all trace of the works following the buy-out of Blue Circle by the Lafarge company and its closure in 2002.
