Covering 100 acres, Barnes Common is one of the largest areas of unenclosed common land close to the centre of London, and is a designated Local Nature Reserve. It also has one of the largest areas of open acid grassland within Greater London. Fine grasses grow on minimal soil, with sand supporting many interesting flowers and small plants.
