Oulton Broad former Isolation Hospital and Mortuary

Municipal isolation hospitals were established from the late 1870s to model plans produced by the Local Government Board. Their rural counterparts like this one at Oulton Broad were smaller, and often attractively laid out with detached villas for administration and nurse's quarters. This is the old Isolation Hospital building for the Lowestoft area. Used in the late 1800s and early 1900s to isolate people who had highly contagious illnesses such as smallpox until their recovery or more usually, death. The wards were at each end of the building with a central mortuary. The hospitals at that time were always built in an isolated location. During World War 2 it was used by the Home Guard. The site is now owned by GXO who use the administration building as their offices for the Cold Store on the site. My grateful thanks to GXO manager Mark Johnson for allowing me access to the site.
