The boathouse used to house the lifeboat but is now a gift shop. The Scotsman figure is an old figurehead from the barge 'Highland Chief', wrecked on the Goodwin Sands in 1869. Bleak House on the cliff behind dates from the early 19th century. Originally Fort House, originally home to the local Fort Captain, was renamed as a result of its connections with Charles Dickens who lodged there in summer.
