The building opened in 1850, incorporating the town hall, the court, a library and a venue for functions including vegetable shows. In 1891 the building was bought by Middlesex County Council and used full-time as a magistrates court. After dispensing justice for 161 years, the court closed on December 9th, 2011 as part of a government cost-cutting drive. The ground floor is now occupied by a cafe and bakery, fittingly called Verdict.
