Grade II* Listed house apparently built as a town house or mansion in the late 17th century. The central staircase has been dated to around 1660. It was at some time divided into 2 tenements. The Montgomery County Times and Shropshire and Mid-Wales Advertiser for 3rd March 1894 carries the following advert. "John Thomas, cabinet maker, and upholsterer, 5 & 6, High Street, Welshpool. Established 1836". He was selling both modern and antique furniture. The 1885 and 1895 directories lists John Thomas in High Street. In my 1903 directory I can't find anyone at this address. This suggests it was possibly in single occupation from at least 1836 which would correspond with the early 19th century alterations although I can't find him in my 1844 directory. J H Anderson & sons photographers are listed here in the 1912 and 1918 directories. Fred E Anderson opened his antiques business here in 1919 according to the listing; I don't have a directory to check this against.
