Bank House, 4 Wilmore Street, Much Wenlock

Early 19th century Grade II Listed house and former bank. Now a three storey six bedroom home, the birthplace of Dr William Penny Brookes (1809-1895 surgeon, magistrate, botanist, and educationalist founder of the Wenlock Olympian Games, inspiring the modern Olympic Games). Having qualified as a surgeon in 1831, he returned to Wenlock, took over his late father’s practice and lived here until his death. The building was sold by the Brookes family to Lloyds Bank in 1903 and they converted it into a Bank on the ground floor, with a flat on the first and second floor. The Bank was reportedly closed in 2000 and sold into private ownership (planning for conversion to a single dwelling was actually granted in Feb.1999 followed by a number other applications for alterations the same year - the only sale on the government website is in Nov. 2016).
