The cavity in this wall surrounding the kitchen garden at Kinlet provided heating which helped propagate fruit. Such walls were constructed at a time when glass was taxed resulting in it being expensive in the construction of glasshouses. Glass tax was abolished by Sir Robert Peel's government in 1845 which resulted in the wider use of glasshouses on estates such as Kinlet.
