SS Hopelyn was a merchant ship which floundered on Scroby Sands after losing her steering gear in a storm on 18th October 1922. A Mayday was sent and the crew of 24 and the ship's cat 'Tishy' took shelter on the only part of the ship's superstructure remaining above water, namely the 12-foot square wireless room. It was not until the 21st the storm died down enough to launch the Agnes Cross lifeboat from Lowestoft with Lowestoft and Gorleston crewmen who were able to rescue everyone, including the cat. The lifeboat cox, William Fleming, was awarded the RNLI gold medal, with the rest of the crew receiving bronze medals.
