Howard Hollingsworth, co-founder of Bourne & Hollingsworth Department Store, visited Lowestoft in 1908 and later bought and renovated the burnt-out Briar Clyffe House and grounds on Gunton Cliff. He became a benefactor to the town. Howard Hollingsworth was close friends with Nicholas Everitt, who lived at Broad House (now Lowestoft Museum) and when Everitt died, he bought his estate and donated it to the town to be used as a public park.
