The building, bottom right, is called Burtree Pastures, originally Mine House. Many old lead shafts are shown on old maps as well as probable hushes leading down to the building. These are named Burtree Slits. Ironstone and limestone was also mined in this area. The Queensberry Ironstone Workings worked the Breckonsike Vein "since Elizabethan times". The bulk of extraction was carried out by the Weardale Iron Company during the mid 19th century. A similar photo to this is shown as Photo 46: "Queensberry Ironstone Workings, Cowshill, Weardale.
