Built in 1680 by Ferdinando Gorges, a Barbadian trader in sugar and other merchandise. He purchased the estate in 1673 for his retirement. The dignified but plain exterior hides a spectacular interior with exceptional plasterwork by John Houlbert and George Dunsterfield.
