Situated some 3½ miles east of Hailsham, Herstmonceux Castle was one of the first buildings constructed of brick when it was erected for Roger Fiennes in the 1440s. The castle was dismantled in 1777 leaving the exterior walls standing, and it remained a ruin until 1913 when it was restored into a residence. In 1946 the castle was acquired by the Admiralty, for use as the Royal Observatory, and, since 1992, it has been part of Queen's University, Ontario.
