Starcross Pumping House was built as part of Brunel's ill-fated South Devon Atmospheric Railway from Exeter to Plymouth. Several pumping stations were built to suck air out of a pipe between the tracks and so cause a carriage with a piston inside the pipe to move along the track. Beset with problems, chiefly of air leakage from the pipe, the system was soon abandoned for conventional steam haulage of trains.
