An empty plot in Hamilton Street marks the land on which Fishguard National School once stood. It was demolished in 1969. It replaced an earlier school building, dated from 1859, which still stands across the road. The dark rectangle on the far side is a slate plaque, barely legible now, which was originally placed above the main door. It states: THIS GROUND WAS GRANTED AND SCHOOLHOUSE ERECTED TO PERPETUATE THE REVERED MEMORY OF GEN. SIR JAMES COCKBURN BART.GCH BY HIS AFFECTIONATE CHILDREN COL. SIR JAMES JOHN AND LADY HAMILTON.
