The Manchester Flower Show was an annual fixture in Platt Fields Park dating back to the 1950s and ran until 2003. Following a 15 year hiatus, it was resurrected and moved to the city centre as part of the King Street Festival in 2018 and as a standalone event in 2021, as the city emerged from the coronavirus lockdown. “The Queen's Gambit”, located on New Cathedral Street, used crates filled with black and white plants, inspired by a chessboard.
