The almshouses were rebuilt in the late 1800s by architects Foster (no relation) and Wood. They took inspiration from the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune in Burgundy (a charitable almshouse) and designed the new buildings in the flamboyant Victorian Burgundian Gothic Revival style that was fashionable at the time. The roofline features many intricate and ornate details, uncommon in the city.
