The pub dates from as early as 1831, possibly designed by William Stirling and is Listed Category B. The “Dr Alexander Paterson Memorial column and Clock” was erected in 1898. Cast in the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow the design is by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, renowned for several major buildings in Glasgow in the Greek style, which is also applied here. As well as the clock, the memorial also served as a drinking fountain, a function probably not perpetuated when it was moved in 1929 to allow the main street to be widened. It is Listed Category C.
