The church was built slightly after the rest of the estate. As the inter-war development of Knowle was started, some land on the main road was set aside and the church was built in stages from 1952. Designers Kenneth Nealon and Partner brought a fresh, bold new look for the Catholic movement. The tall nave and four stage bell tower are powerful yet simple statements, all built from a reinforced concrete frame, faced with Portland stone, and roofs clad in copper.
