This was once the above ground section of Central station and the end of the Cheshire Lines Committee's route from Manchester Central and - in its last days - a local service to Gateacre. Beneath the site lies the former Mersey Railway's station, once the end of the line for services under the river to Birkenhead and beyond. The low-level station is now linked up to the old line to Manchester, but only provides local services between the former Lancashire and Yorkshire routes north of Liverpool and the Cheshire Lines route as far as Hunts Cross.
